Benefitting Others by David Edsall

Shang Longrik Gyatso Rinpoche
David Edsall, USA
In the modern world, I see increasingly more focus on the search for material wealth, beauty and the pursuit of one's desires. Less focus is placed on aspects of life that would be of real benefit to oneself and those around you; for example, the pursuit to benefit others.
In my studies with Rinpoche over the years, along with my readings of traditional Chinese stories, I've heard of the people who devote massive amounts of time and energy towards benefiting others. Not only that but I see an example of such a person in Rinpoche himself.
To see someone devote their time and effort towards the alleviation of the pain of others is something really spectacular indeed. How great it would be if even a small portion of the world would truly pursue such a path in their life.  When one puts themselves into the shoes of others and feels the pain and suffering that they endure, then that takes the focus away from one's own pain. It makes one realize that one's pain is not really that great at all. It also creates a desire to help others overcome their pain.
I have a hope that we all can see this more clearly. That we can see through our attachments and desires, and realize that the pursuit of them doesn't lead to true happiness at all. Through this, we will all wake up and realize that we are all in the same situation. If everyone works for the benefit of others, then that not only benefits everyone else, but it benefits ourselves as well.
